SURGE is a collection of programs aimed delivering innovation and entrepreneurship training to science trainees across all levels. In addition, we want our students to make meaningful connections with industry.
We also like to engage industries in Deep Dive events as mentors and judges. This can be a great way to participate without a full-weekend commitment, but still tap into the energy and excitement of these events.
Run an Event
Do you have an idea for a weekend Deep Dive event, like a hackathon, makeathon, or startup weekend? Please contact us to discuss. Keep in mind that ‘hackathon’ could mean working with code, but we define the term much more broadly in the sense that hacking is breaking things apart, playing with them, and creating something new. This could be around a technique, instrument, or a scientific problem.
Bring Us Problems
Even if you aren’t interested in running an event, we are always looking for interesting problems for students to tackle. Please keep in mind that the focus of SURGE is on trainee-driven, commercialization-oriented problem solving. This means that we are looking for big problems and needs in the world, and aim to solve them through viable business models (those that have high growth potential, where the costs of research and development can be recovered through revenue streams). If you are looking for students to solve specific problems in your company, or work on basic research, there are better options such as internships, independent research projects, and co-op students.
Another important consideration is intellectual property. Our strong preference in SURGE is for student teams to develop independent leadership skills, and hold their own IP. If you have ideas that you would like to hold IP for, and/or be directly involved in commercializing, you are welcome to pitch them to SURGE teams but the expectation is that you would be an active member of the team. We are more than happy to discuss these issues with you.
SURGE teams may need specialized scientific expertise, advice, and lab facilities. We have many teams in various stages from conceptualization to prototyping who can benefit from your deep subject matter expertise and experience. Please contact us if you are interested in mentoring; even if you don’t, we hope you’ll be welcoming if teams reach out to you.
