SURGE OceanTech Club

SURGE Clubs are designed to offer students the opportunity to engage with various research methods and technologies with a flexible schedule in mind. SURGE clubs are envisioned to meet students where they’re at and cater to all levels of knowledge.

  • The build for this term’s OceanTech Club is based on the SeaPerch ROV, which is a beginner-friendly ROV kit

  • The build is broken down into several tasks: the frame, the controller, thrusters, and a testing phase

  • 3 ByeWeeks allow groups to catch up to the week’s objectives

OceanTech Club

Starting in the 2024-2025 academic year, SURGE will introduce its brand new OceanTech Club.

OceanTech Club spawned from SURGE’s previous ROV Deep Dive, where participants were keen to continue building their skills beyond the workshop. Students from all disciplines will be able to design, build, and test various Oceanography-related instruments, including remotely operated vessels (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vessels (AUVs), Concentration Temperature Depth probes (CTDs), and many more.

The club will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 4:05pm to 5:35pm at SURGE, beginning the 21st of January 2025. No registration needed as the weekly sessions are drop-in. Can’t make it some weeks? No worries at all as the club is designed such that you’ll be able to jump back in easily. No prior experience is needed either! For any questions, reach out to surge@dal.ca!

Schedule

How the club works

  • Come join us according to YOUR schedule. Can’t make it for some weeks? Can’t stay the whole time? No problem! You’ll still be able to join us, be a part of a group each time you join us, and gain hands on experience.

Each week, new members may join a group at a table while others may skip the week’s build based on their schedule, all of which is okay! Ultimately, you’ll still be able to build and drive your very own ROV!

  • Whether you’re coming with a group of friends or flying solo, you’re welcome here! Existing groups can choose to do a build themselves if they prefer so, while those coming by themselves will be able to form groups with others who have also come solo!

  • There are no grades here. We encourage you to fail, as long as you do so safely and you learn something from it! Please adhere to the guidance from OceanTech Club staff at all times.
