SURGE Clubs

The SURGE Clubs project is designed to offer students the opportunity to engage with various research methods and technologies with a flexible schedule in mind. Envisioned to meet students where they’re at and catering to all levels of knowledge, SURGE Clubs is currently being piloted with the BCI Club.

The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Club welcomes students across disciplines to explore the integration of neuroscience with technology. A BCI is a system that uses information from the brain to control devices/software. Through independent or collaborative BCI projects, members gain hands-on experience with electroencephalography (EEG), data science, and machine learning techniques. The club meets at the SURGE Sandbox (LSC Oceanography 2660) on Wednesdays. Drop-in anytime and for however long between 3-5pm.

Starting September 2024, SURGE Clubs will be split into 3 streams:

  • NeuroTech Club: An expansion of the current BCI Club, NeuroTech Club will offer students the chance to gain hands experience with a wide range of neurotechnology instruments.

  • OceanTech Club: OceanTech Club spawned from SURGE’s previous ROV Deep Dive where participants were keen to continue building their skills beyond the workshop. Students will be able to design, build, and test various Oceanography-related instruments, including remotely operated vessels (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vessels (AUVs), Concentration Temperature Depth probes (CTDs), and many more.

  • Scientific Exploration Club: Based on a demand from students to learn more about careers/options in science, the Scientific Exploration Club will brings experts in various aspects of science right to SURGE and students. Here, students will be able to learn about pathways in science, taking science out of the classroom and into the real world.
