Deep Dives

Events will provide instruction and guidance in the science-related problem/technique, as well as how a viable business model could be developed to implement the solution. Topics we have explored in the past include the following:

  • Virtual and Augmented Reality Hackathon

  • Climate Change Hackathon

  • Neuro-Hackathon on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs)

  • iGEM (the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition) hackathon and innovation training

  • Ghost Gear Hackathon in partnership with WWF and FGCAC

  • Launch Oceans 6-week startup incubator program

Deep Dive events are multi-day or multi-week events that give students the opportunity to create solutions to real world problems. SURGE Deep Dives include hackathons, make-a-thons, startup weekends, and ideathons which all have themes around particular topics, problems, or challenges.

These events are intended to provide students with brief, but deep, exposure to the process of innovation and entrepreneurship through experiential learning in team settings, as well as introducing students to different scientific tools/concept.

Events are team based to foster the development of soft skills in working collaboratively in groups, project management, delegation, brainstorming, and problem-solving.
